My name is Meagan Thorup. I teach and I love it.
I’ve taught a variety of subjects throughout my career, but I mostly teach music – specifically orchestra. I’ve been teaching for over ten years now and the longer I teach, the more I am intrigued and fascinated by teaching. Pedagogy is my passion, and I am always trying to improve my craft.
When not at school, I spend most of my time either doing more music-related activities, reading, or doing some sort of craft. I love working with my hands. Recently I’ve gotten into quilting and I do quite a bit of that. I also conduct and play in several community orchestras. I believe that every community should have a place where people can go to make music together, no matter what level they are on. I’m always thrilled when someone joins my orchestra after not playing their instrument for ten or fifteen years. Everyone should have a chance to make music.
Because teaching allows me quite a bit of time off, I take full advantage of that and travel as often as possible. I especially love traveling to other countries. So far I’ve been to ten countries outside of the United States, and I’ve been to a few of them more than once. I spent a summer in El Salvador doing humanitarian aid projects and studied abroad in Spain. I’ve also been to Mexico, Peru, Austria, Germany, Switzerland, England, Ireland, and the Czech Republic. Spain and Switzerland are probably my top destination choices, although I have loved almost every place I’ve visited.
Lastly, I have to mention my beautiful dog Coda. He’s the joy of my life and the best companion anyone could wish for. He gets me out of the house and has taught me more about teaching than probably anyone else. I can’t imagine my life without him.
